Haridwar is a special place being one of India’s 7 holy cities, and only second to Varanasi, it is the most popular place to watch the Ganga Aarti unfold. The Ganga Aarti takes place at Har Ki Pauri, a famous ghat meaning the feet of Lord Vishnu’, located in the heart of Haridwar. It is believed that it is the precise spot where the Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains Har Ki Pauri got its name from the feet of Lord Vishnu because the footprints of God Vishnu, Vishnu Charan Paduka are believed to be imprinted on the wall below the water of Ganga here. According to Hindu belief, Haridwar is one of the four places where drops of Amrit accidentally spilled from the Kumbha when Lord Garuda the celestial bird of Lord Vishnu was carrying it. The main Ganga Arti begins at around 19:15. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even for the less religious beings, this is recommended simply for the beauty of it all. Har ki Pauri visit
Good to observe evening Aarti from bridge itself, there is only Aarti at temple not on ghat so better to reach temple early. Aarti at ghat happens only on auspicious days. One can take bath in Ganges, early morning is best time ( 5 am). There is temple Aarti during that time also.

A visit to Har ki pauri
Great place to visit and enjoy the views of river Ganga. Safe to take a dip in the river with many barriers and chains to hold on to. Easy to reach from Dehradun. However, be prepared to face crowds. Place needs some upkeep. Needs cleaning of walkways and stairs.

KAR KI PAURI - Hindu Religious Bathing Area
This is the main bathing area in Haridwar. Depending =on when you go it can be heaving. We went this time in Sept 2023 and it wasn’t that bad. We took turns to bathe and look after each other cloths. The water generally is very cold, but it less so in Sep. Nov to Feb its freezing. Don’t believe anyone that tells you the water is dirty or unclean. The reality is the strength of the ganga determines things. If you go in Jan to Mar its clear… less so in other months. Enjoy the spiritual experience. The river will draw you to it. There are numerous priests who sit at Har ki Pauri who will perform puja, etc for you. Don’t allow them then to force you into doing anything g… You want to do a simple ganga puja and you have do determine to feed to 10, 20… 1000 pandits. I generally give then a few hundred rupees. It a spiritual experience please do make the effort.  The other thing you should do is attend and listen to the evening Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. There is also one that take place in Rishikesh. The evening aarti is at 5:30 PM in winter and 06:30PM in summer.  The best place to watch it is from the bathing area opposite Hari Pauri. A word of warning peoples start gather 2-hrs before the start time of the aarti. However, its well worth attending and seeing and listening to the whole thing. There is also a morning aarti at 5:30 am in summer and 6:30 am in winter.  These tend to be less well attending because of the temperature early morning
