Katarmal Sun Temple is a significant yet less-explored heritage site located in Almora district of Uttarakhand, India. This 800-year-old temple complex is one of the few temples dedicated to the Sun God in the country and is an exemplar of ancient art and architecture. Perched on a hilltop at an altitude of 2116 meters, the temple offers a panoramic view of the verdant Kumaon Hills. The complex comprises one main temple, called Burhadita or Vraddhaditya (the big sun god), surrounded by 45 smaller shrines exquisitely carved out of stone. The main deity, the image of Surya, is known for its unique architectural design and was once adorned with a golden crown. The intricate carvings on the temple walls depict floral patterns and images of gods and goddesses, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. The temple's unique architectural pattern signifies the early medieval North Indian style, known as the 'Kutumbinar' style of temple architecture. Although in a dilapidated condition, the Archeological Survey of India has taken measures to preserve and restore the monumental site.

Beautiful architecture that takes you centuries back into the rich heritage of India. Away from the city along the greens of the Almora.

Ancient, beautiful
The construction itself is worth a visit. Made from stones, there is the main temple and smaller temples around it in the same complex. The site also gives a great view of the valley.
