Best Time To Visit Kumari Chowk (Kathmandu) In 2026 - 2027

When to Visit Kumari Chowk

Visiting Kumari Chowk, a courtyard situated within Kathmandu's historic Hanuman Dhoka palace complex, is a remarkable experience year-round, but particular times may enhance your trip. The best time to visit Kumari Chowk is generally from September to November during the autumn season. This period is known for clear skies, mild temperatures, and the best weather conditions for exploring the ancient architecture and observing the living goddess, or Kumari, in her traditional environment. Autumn also marks the season of festivities, including the grand celebration of Indra Jatra and Dashain, where the living goddess is paraded around the city in her palanquin. The cultural vibrancy and religious significance of these festivals provide a unique insight into the local traditions and add to the overall experience of your visit.

The second-best time for visiting Kumari Chowk is during the spring months of March to May. The weather is comfortable and the temperatures are favorable, making it another ideal time for tourists to explore. Kathmandu comes to life with colorful blooms and the air is filled with the fragrance of rhododendrons, Nepal's national flower. This season also sees fewer tourists compared to autumn, which might make for a more tranquil visit. However, foreign visitors should be mindful of the occasional showers as spring ushers in the pre-monsoon period. Remember that the Kumari makes a public appearance only occasionally and that Tuesdays and Saturdays are generally good days to catch a glimpse of her, though the timings can vary.
