The illustrious history of Lalbagh Botanical Garden begins with its establishment by Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, in 1760. Inspired by the Mughal Gardens that were gaining popularity during that period, Hyder Ali decided to create this garden on the model of a Mughal Garden that he had seen during his campaigns in the region of modern day Sira, India. The name "Lalbagh" was derived from the collection of red roses that were prevalent during its inception.
The garden was later completed by Hyder Ali's son, Tipu Sultan, who enriched the garden by importing trees and plants from countries all over the world. Lalbagh covers an area of 240 acres and is home to over 1,000 species of flora. The Glass House, modeled after London's Crystal Palace, was constructed in 1889 by the British and is a central attraction during the biannual flower shows which are a significant part of the garden's legacy.
Lalbagh has been a pivotal attraction in the city of Bangalore for both the local populace and tourists alike.
