The history of tourism at this esteemed centre is tied closely to the history of Chandigarh, which was conceived as a symbol of the country's progressive outlook and aspirations for the future.

The Genesis of Chandigarh Tourism

Chandigarh's journey as a tourist destination began shortly after its inauguration in the 1950s. Being the first planned city of India, it attracted visitors curious to witness the embodiment of Le Corbusier's modernist principles. It was initially visited by architecture aficionados, urban planners, and scholars eager to study its design and layout fostered by the comprehensive plan laid out by Le Corbusier.

Le Corbusier Centre: From Office to Museum

The building that now houses the Le Corbusier Centre was originally used as the office by the architect and his team while conceptualizing and supervising the construction of Chandigarh. After Le Corbusier's departure, the significance of the place as an archival and research hub for the modernist movement grew. It was only with time and growing interest in Chandigarh's unique history that the government decided to convert the space into a centre dedicated to preserving Le Corbusier’s legacy.

Following its transformation into a museum, the Le Corbusier Centre has become a focal point for tourists. It was officially opened to the public in the year 2008, offering an intimate look at Le Corbusier's vision through original plans, drawings, sketches, and photographs that detail the development of Chandigarh.

Immersion into Architectural Brilliance

Visitors to the Le Corbusier Centre can deeply immerse themselves in understanding how Chandigarh came to be. The free-flowing space, accessible exhibits, and carefully preserved artifacts offer a look into the innovative mind of one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Tourists leave with a greater appreciation of not just the city's layout but also of the architectural principles that have influenced urban designs across the world.
