Best Time To Visit Lion's Paw (Sigiriya) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Lion's Paw, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

The ideal period for visiting the Lion's Paw at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka is during the dry season, which typically runs from January to April. During these months, you can expect minimal rainfall, allowing a more comfortable climb and an undisturbed exploration of the ancient rock fortress. The weather is also cooler during the mornings, making it the perfect time to ascend the rock as the sun is less intense. However, these are also peak tourist months, so expect higher numbers of visitors and longer queues. For those looking to avoid crowds, early morning visits are advisable to capture the stunning sunrise views from the top of the rock.

In contrast, May to August brings the Yala monsoon, where the region experiences a significant increase in rainfall, which can make the climb slippery and more challenging. Similarly, the latter part of the year, from October to December, is affected by the Maha monsoon, which also brings heavy showers and can limit outdoor activities. If your travel dates fall within these periods, always check the weather forecast and be prepared for sudden showers. Despite the rain, the lush greenery and water-filled moats that surround the fortress can be exceptionally beautiful during this time, offering a unique experience for those willing to brave the wet conditions.
