Nechung Monastery (Dharamshala) History

Exploring the Historical Nechung Monastery

Nestled amidst the serene Himalayan foothills in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, the Nechung Monastery stands as a bastion of Tibetan spirituality and culture. The history of tourism connected to this sacred space is deeply intertwined with the arrival of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in 1959.

The Emergence of Dharamshala as a Tibetan Hub

Following the Chinese occupation of Tibet, many Tibetans, including monks and spiritual leaders, were forced to flee their homeland. They found refuge in India, and the small town of Dharamshala became a pivotal center for the preservation of their religious practices, culture, and heritage. The foundation of the Nechung Monastery in India was laid during this period of exile, with its origins tracing back to the Nechung Monastery in Tibet, which acted as the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet.
