Nelong Valley, situated near the Indo-Tibetan border in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India, offers a stark yet captivating landscape reminiscent of the Tibetan highlands. Known for its stark beauty and strategic location, Nelong Valley was once an important trade route connecting India and Tibet. The valley remained closed for civilians after the Indo-China war in 1962 due to security concerns, only reopening for tourism in 2015. Nelong Valley, at an altitude of around 11,000 feet, is characterized by its rugged terrain, wild mountain flora and fauna, and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Visitors can expect to see rare wildlife species such as the Snow Leopard and Himalayan Blue Sheep along with a variety of birds. The cold desert ecosystem here is marked by minimal vegetation, and visitors can observe remnants of the old trade route, including wooden bridges and stone huts used by traders and pilgrims. Nelong Valley, with its deep gorges and unique geography, is also home to fragile ecosystems and diverse landscapes that draw trekkers, biodiversity enthusiasts and photographers.
