Nelong Valley is a remote and picturesque valley located in the Gangotri National Park in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. Due to its high altitude and close proximity to the Indo-Tibetan border, the best time to visit this hidden gem is during the summer months from May to June and post-monsoon months from September to November. During these months, the weather is relatively pleasant, and the snow from the winter melts away to reveal the rugged beauty of the landscape. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for trekking and exploring, whereas nights can still be quite cold, so proper gear is essential.
Visitation to Nelong Valley is tightly controlled by the Uttarakhand Forest Department to preserve its delicate ecosystem and due to its strategic location. Thus, visiting during the recommended months presents the highest chances for obtaining permits. The monsoon season, typically from July to August, is not advisable due to heavy rains that can cause landslides and make the treacherous roads even more dangerous. Additionally, the valley remains closed to tourists in the winter months, from December to April, when the area is covered in snow, making it inaccessible and inhospitable for visitors.
