New Tehri is the district headquarters of Tehri Garhwal, at an elevation of about 1950 meters above sea level in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This planned municipality is known for the stunning panoramic vistas it offers of the Himalayan ranges and the Tehri Lake, which has been formed due to the damming of the Bhagirathi River. The town is of recent development and plays host to the Tehri Dam, one of the largest and highest dams in India, and among the tallest in the world. The town is a hub for tourists who come to witness the marvel of engineering in the form of the Tehri Dam and for enjoying water sports at the artificial lake created by the dam. The area surrounding New Tehri is rich in natural beauty with lush green hills and vistas of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks. The town is also an access point to numerous trekking trails, pilgrimage sites, and other tourist destinations in the Tehri Garhwal region.
