Type of destination: Hindu Temple
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
The Surkanda Devi Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand, India. At an altitude of about 2,750 meters above sea level, it is part of the Devi Darshan triangle, which comprises three important temples in the region, the others being Chandrabadni and Kunjapuri. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati, wife of Lord Shiva, who is worshipped under the name Surkanda. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, dense forests, and the enchanting view of the Garhwal region. According to the mythology, the head of Goddess Sati fell here when Lord Shiva was carrying her immolated body, and thus it is considered one of the Shakti Peeths. The temple can be reached after a scenic but strenuous trek of about 2 kilometers from the village Kaddukhal. The most striking feature of Surkanda Devi Temple is the Ganga Dussehra fair, held annually in the month of May-June, attracting thousands of devotees.
