A Stalwart of Bihar's Cultural Heritage

Established in 1917 during the British colonial era, the museum has been an integral component of Bihar's tourism landscape, and an enduring symbol of the state’s historical significance.

Historical Significance

The Patna Museum was built to commemorate the historical importance of Pataliputra, the ancient name by which Patna was known. It was during this period that the city was at the zenith of glory, being the capital of various Indian empires, such as the Maurya and Gupta empires. The museum's architecture itself, inspired by the Indo-Saracenic and Mughal styles, stands as a testament to the region's historical narratives.

Collection and Exhibits

The Museum houses a diverse range of artifacts from Bihar's rich past, including Indian bronzes, terracotta from various archaeological sites, and stone and metal sculptures that offer visitors a peek into the profound history. The most distinguished of these is the 'Didarganj Yakshi', a stunning example of Mauryan art.
