Rashtriya Shala has a notable place in India’s history as a center that was established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 during the non-cooperation movement in Rajkot, Gujarat. The primary objective of Rashtriya Shala was to promote the values of self-reliance and swadeshi (self-sufficiency), which were core principles of India's struggle for independence. At this institution, emphasis was laid on manual labor, agricultural work, and the production of khadi (hand-spun cloth). Over the years, Rashtriya Shala has continued to uphold Gandhian principles by engaging in educational activities and social work. Visitors can explore the complex where weaving activities are still carried out, and khadi products are sold. The institution also houses a museum that displays artefacts and photographs from the Gandhian era, offering insight into the history of the India's independence movement.
