Shashur Monastery, located in the serene Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India, is a Buddhist monastery that lies at an altitude of around 6000 feet. It was founded in the 17th century by Lama Deva Tyatsho of Zanskar, who was a missionary of the Gelugpa sect. The name 'Shashur' translates to 'blue pines' in the local dialect, referring to the blue pine trees that surround the monastery. This sacred establishment is adorned with vibrant Thangka paintings, murals depicting various stories of Buddhism, and a large statue of Guru Rinpoche. The architecture of the monastery reflects a distinct Tibetan influence, with its intricate wood carvings and a statue of Namgyal. Every year in the month of June or July, the monastery hosts the Chham dance festival, which is a significant event attracting tourists and devotees alike. The festival features masked dances performed by the lamas, representing a narrative of good triumphing over evil.
