Best Time To Visit Sonprayag (Rudraprayag) In 2026

Best Time to Visit Sonprayag, Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, India

Sonprayag, a small town in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India, holds great religious significance for Hindu pilgrims due to its location en route to the sacred Kedarnath Temple. The best time to visit Sonprayag is from May to June and again from September to October. These months correspond with the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods, providing favorable conditions for pilgrimage and sightseeing. During this time, the weather is relatively dry, and the temperatures are moderate, making the challenging journey to Kedarnath more manageable and pleasant. It is important to note that the Kedarnath temple typically opens for pilgrims in the first week of May and closes in the first week of November, coinciding with the festival of Akshaya Tritiya and Bhai Dooj respectively. Therefore, planning your trip around the temple's opening schedule is crucial for those intending to continue onwards to Kedarnath.

Monsoon season, from July to August, is less ideal for visiting Sonprayag due to heavy rains and the risk of landslides which can disrupt travel plans. The region receives abundant rainfall, and the terrain can become quite treacherous. However, if you wish to experience the lush greenery and blooming flora of Uttarakhand post-monsoons, late October can be a beautiful time to visit, albeit with the caution that the temperature starts dropping significantly as winter approaches. With winters being extremely cold and the area often covered in snow, many facilities may be closed, and the journey might be challenging. Regardless of when you plan to visit, ensuring that you stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and local advisories is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trip.
