The Thimphu Tshechu is one of Bhutan's grandest cultural celebrations, and food plays a significant role in the festivities. Bhutanese cuisine, shaped by the country's isolation and Buddhist influences, traditionally excludes beef and features a variety of other meats including pork, chicken, and yak. However, during Tshechu, the emphasis is also on communal harmony and vegetarian dishes are widely enjoyed as well. The festival food is communal, served buffet-style, and it's common for families to bring dishes to share. The joyous occasion is as much about social and spiritual nourishment as it is about the literal enjoyment of food.
