History of Bada Ganpati

Bada Ganpati holds the distinction of housing one of the largest statues of Lord Ganesha in the world. It was built in the year 1875 under the commission of Shri Dadhich. The idea behind its construction was not just to exhibit piety but also to make an idol so big that it could be seen from any part of the city without the need to visit the temple.

The majestic statue measures about eight meters in height and is made from a conglomeration of various materials including bricks, limestone, jaggery, and holy soil and water from major pilgrim sites in India. This harmonious blend symbolizes unity and faith amidst diversity, replicating the unity of India as a nation. Since its construction, Bada Ganpati has become one of the central places of worship and a key attraction in Indore.

Visitor Information

Bada Ganpati is open throughout the year and there is no entry fee. However, during festivals and special occasions, visitors might have to queue due to the high number of devotees. Appropriate dress code is advised to respect the sanctity of the temple.
