The Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun is a premier institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). Designed by C.G. Blomfield and inaugurated in 1929, the impressive Greco-Roman colonial architecture sprawls over 450 hectares, with lush green lawns and a serene setting that contributes to its aesthetic and scientific appeal. The main building is a National Heritage which houses six museums related to forestry, including the Pathology Museum, Social Forestry Museum, Silviculture Museum, Timber Museum, Non-Wood Forest Products Museum, and the Entomology Museum. These multifaceted museums provide insights into forest research, the history, culture, flora and fauna, and the diverse ecosystems of the region. Students, researchers, and visitors flock to FRI for educational tours, academic programs, and to enjoy the tranquil beauty of this historical edifice. The institute also encompasses a botanical garden that has a rich collection of plant species, making it an important hub for botanical research and conservational studies.
