Gangtok is the capital city of the Indian state of Sikkim and is known for its stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Khangchendzonga, which is India's highest peak and the world's third highest peak. It is also renowned for its cultural diversity, beautiful monasteries, temples, and vibrant Tibetan Buddhist culture.
The best time to visit Gangtok is from March to June when the weather is mild and pleasant. This is the spring and early summer period. However, October to mid-December is also a great time to witness the clear view of the Himalayan ranges.
The nearest airport to Gangtok is Pakyong Airport (PYG), around 35 km from the city, while the major airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal, which is approximately 125 km away. The nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri railway station (NJP) in West Bengal. From both the airport and the railway station, visitors can hire taxis or take buses to reach Gangtok.
Indian nationals do not need any special permits to visit Gangtok. However, for visiting certain areas like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and North Sikkim, both Indian and foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Foreign tourists have restrictions to visit some border areas and need to be in a group of two or more to be issued a permit.
Some of the must-visit places in Gangtok include the Enchey Monastery, Rumtek Monastery, Tashi View Point, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, the Flower Exhibition Centre, Saramsa Garden, Banjhakri Falls, and the Institute of Tibetology. The nearby Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass are also popular destinations.
Gangtok offers a variety of local Sikkimese cuisine that visitors should try such as momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), phagshapa (pork dish), gundruk (fermented vegetable soup), and Sikkim's famed tea. Tibetan and Nepali dishes are also widely popular.
Tourists can enjoy a range of activities like cable car rides over the city, trekking to various trails, mountain biking, paragliding, shopping for handicrafts in the local markets, visiting flower exhibitions, and exploring the rich culture through various monasteries and temples.

Usually, 3-4 days are sufficient to explore the main attractions within Gangtok. However, if you plan to visit the surrounding areas such as North Sikkim, Nathula Pass, or go on treks, you might need around 7-8 days.
