Ghoom Monastery, also known as Yiga Choeling Monastery, is a revered Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated in the peaceful hill town of Ghoom near Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Built in 1850 by the Mongolian monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, the monastery proudly stands at an elevation of 8,000 feet. It is famous for housing a 15-foot high statue of the 'Maitreya Buddha' (the Coming Buddha) which is a remarkable piece of religious art, casting a serene aura around. The monastery is adorned with beautiful thangka paintings, which are Buddhist paintings on cotton, or silk appliqué, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. Visitors are drawn to its tranquil atmosphere and the panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The architecture reflects the traditional Tibetan style, featuring elaborate designs and brilliant colors. Ghoom Monastery is also an educational center where the principles of Tibetan Buddhism are taught to monks.
