Established in 1977, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is nestled within the picturesque Eastern Ghats of India, located in Visakhapatnam (popularly known as Vizag) in Andhra Pradesh. Sprawling over an area of approximately 625 acres, it is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, and has since been a pivotal attraction in the region's tourism landscape.
The inception of the park marked an important step in the conservation efforts within the state. It was established under the guidance of Sri. P. Shiv Shankar, the then Honorable Minister of Andhra Pradesh, with an aim to provide residents and visitors a space that conserves wildlife and educates the public about the importance of nature and ecosystems. Initially, the park featured a modest collection of animal species, but over time, it expanded to house over 80 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Over the years, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park has become a sanctuary of learning and conservation. The park has focused on creating environments that mimic the natural habitats of the animals, leading to the establishment of various sections like the Carnivores Section, Lesser Carnivores Section, Primates Section, Small Mammals Section, Birds Section, and Reptiles Section.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, significant efforts were made to develop the infrastructure and facilities, improving the park for both the animals and visitors. This included upgrading the animal enclosures, enhancing visitor amenities, and integrating educational activities within the park.
In recent years, zoos and wildlife parks, including the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, have moved towards more interactive and immersive experiences. The park has embraced this trend by offering safari tours, guided walks, and educational programmes.
