Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex, located on a hilltop near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India, is an ancient Buddhist site which dates back to 2000 years. It was discovered in 1976 during an aerial survey by the Indian Navy. Archaeological efforts have unearthed numerous stupas, chaityas, viharas, and a large congregation hall. The complex was active between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE, playing a significant role in the propagation of Buddhism to Asia from the Indian subcontinent, due to its strategic placement on the trade route. The site offers panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a serene destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. The physical remnants at Thotlakonda bear testimony to the influence of the Hinayana school of Buddhism and the cultural exchanges between the regions of South Asia. The name 'Thotlakonda' is derived from the presence of a number of rock-cut cisterns or 'thotla' in Telugu on the hilltop.
