Kumbhalgarh Fort is an imposing Mewar fortress on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, India. Constructed during the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, and expanded throughout the 19th century, Kumbhalgarh Fort is famed for its massive defensive wall which extends for 36 kilometers, making it the second longest continuous wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. The fort is perched on a hill 1,100 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary which surrounds it. The complex includes over 360 temples, among which Shiva Temple with a huge Shivalinga (phallic form) is remarkably notable. The fort's architecture is a splendid display of the influence of both Hinduism and Jainism over the centuries and showcases the ingenuity of Rajput military defense strategies with seven fortified gateways and ramparts designed to house an army inside. Kumbhalgarh also holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, one of Mewar's most celebrated rulers and warriors.
