St. Paul's Cathedral Kolkata, West Bengal, India

St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata stands as an epitome of architectural grandeur and religious significance in the heart of the city. Built in the 19th century, this cathedral has always been an attraction for tourists from all over the world. Its Indo-Gothic design and spiritual ambiance have drawn visitors who appreciate art, culture, and history since its inception.

History of St. Paul's Cathedral

The cathedral was built to replace St. John's Church, which had become too small for Kolkata's growing European community. The foundation stone was laid in the year 1839; however, it wasn't until 1847 that the cathedral was consecrated, owing to various delays. Bishop Daniel Wilson was the driving force behind the construction of St. Paul's Cathedral, and his remains are interred there.

The structure has seen several renovations due to damages from natural calamities such as earthquakes. The tower was reconstructed along the lines of the central tower of Canterbury Cathedral following the earthquake of 1897. The beautiful stained glass windows and frescoes are particularly notable and are a major draw for tourists and art enthusiasts.
