Previously called Kondhana, the fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670. Its name, Sinhagad, could be translated to 'Lion's Fort', metaphorically indicating its strength and strategic importance. Sinhagad's walls and bastions bear the imprints of its historic grandeur and the fort now stands as a significant monument showcasing Maratha architecture. Traditional Maratha military housing, Kalyan Darwaza, and Tanaji memorial are significant sites within the fort.
