Best Time to Visit Tabo Monastery, Lahaul Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India

The ideal time to visit Tabo Monastery in Lahaul Valley, Himachal Pradesh, is during the summer months, from May to October. During this period, the weather is relatively warm and pleasant, making it perfect for exploring the ancient monastery and the stunning surrounding landscape. The temperatures range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, allowing visitors to comfortably engage in outdoor activities and sightseeing. Travellers should be aware that the monastery is located at a high altitude, so daytime can be sunny and warm, while nights can still be quite cool even in the summer.

It's important to note that Lahaul Valley and the Spiti region become inaccessible during the winter months due to heavy snowfall, which blocks the mountain passes, especially the Rohtang Pass and the Kunzum Pass. Therefore, the monastic complex is closed to visitors from November to April. If you are planning to visit during the summer, make sure to check the status of the passes and the availability of accommodation, as the region often sees a surge in tourism during the peak months of July and August. In addition, the annual Chaam festival held at Tabo Monastery is something not to be missed, typically taking place in June or July each year, and this is a time when visitors can witness vibrant cultural performances and religious rituals.
