Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex, Visakhapatnam Tourism

Perched on a hilltop along the vibrant coast of the Bay of Bengal, the Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is a serene testament to the extensive reach of Buddhism in South India. The history of tourism in this religious and historical enclave is deeply rooted in its origin that dates back to the 3rd century BCE.

A Brief History of Thotlakonda

The site was first discovered during an aerial survey by the Indian Navy in the 1970s. Excavations by the Andhra Pradesh State Archaeology Department during the 1980s revealed a complex spread over 120 acres that once served as a monastic retreat over 2,000 years ago. The site's significance in the ancient maritime trade routes made it a bustling hub where monks rested and studied, thereby enhancing Vizag's historical importance.

The archaeological findings included a plethora of stupas, a congregation hall, viharas (monastic cells), a refectory (dining hall), and other structural and relic caskets with inscriptions in Brahmi script. These discoveries played a crucial role in illuminating the area's past and subsequently generated interest among not just scholars and historians, but also tourists seeking a connection with ancient cultures.

Tourism Development at Thotlakonda

Following its rediscovery, efforts were made to develop Thotlakonda as a significant heritage and cultural destination. The site now includes well-laid paths, signage to guide visitors through the ruins, and basic amenities. The State Tourism Board has also been actively promoting this Buddhist complex alongside other nearby sites like Bavikonda and Pavuralakonda to showcase the region's rich Buddhist legacy.
