Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, Sikkim is a hidden gem in Northeast India that offers breathtaking landscapes, charming culture, and warm hospitality. However, before you pack your bags and head to this mesmerizing destination, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the permit requirements for Indian and foreign tourists visiting Sikkim.
Inner Line Permit (ILP)
Indian tourists visiting Sikkim require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter certain areas in the state. The ILP is a travel document issued by the Government of India that allows Indian citizens to visit restricted areas for a specified period. The ILP for Sikkim can be obtained online or from designated check posts upon arrival. It is advisable to carry a valid photo ID proof while applying for the ILP.
Protected Area Permit (PAP)
Foreign tourists, excluding nationals of Bhutan, Nepal, and the Maldives, need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit Sikkim. The PAP is issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, and is usually valid for 30 days. Foreign tourists can apply for the PAP through registered tour operators or travel agencies in India. It's important to note that individual foreign travelers are not allowed to apply for the PAP; they must be part of a group with a minimum of two members for the permit to be issued.
How to Apply for Permits
For Indian Tourists:
- You can apply for the ILP online through the official Sikkim tourism website or at the entry check posts in Rangpo, Melli, Singtam, and Pakyong.
- Provide the necessary details such as name, address, duration of stay, and purpose of visit while applying for the ILP.
For Foreign Tourists:
- Foreign tourists must apply for the PAP through a registered tour operator or travel agency in India.
- Submit a copy of the passport with a valid visa and two passport-sized photographs while applying for the PAP.
Permit Fees
The permit fees for Indian and foreign tourists visiting Sikkim vary based on the duration of stay and the areas to be visited. The cost of the ILP for Indian tourists is approximately INR 100 per person, while the PAP for foreign tourists is around INR 200 per person. It is advisable to check the current permit fees before planning your trip to Sikkim.
