Welcome fellow travel enthusiasts! Today, I am going to take you on a journey through the mesmerizing land of Sikkim. And what makes this travelogue extra special is the fact that it was a solo woman travel experience. So, buckle up and get ready to discover the wonders of this hidden gem in the eastern part of India.
Sikkim, nestled in the Himalayas, is a tiny state but it packs a punch when it comes to natural beauty and cultural diversity. From snow-capped mountains to vibrant monasteries, cascading waterfalls to serene lakes, Sikkim has it all. This is also one of the safest places in India, making it a perfect destination for solo female travelers.
Before embarking on any solo trip, especially as a woman, it is essential to do meticulous planning. Researching about the destination, understanding the local culture, and ensuring safety measures are all part of the process.
To start off with, I booked my flights to Bagdogra Airport, which is the nearest airport to Sikkim. From there, I took a shared taxi to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. Gangtok serves as a base for most travelers and is well-connected to other parts of the state.
Next, I decided to divide my time between three main destinations - Gangtok, Pelling, and Lachung. Each of these places offers a unique experience and showcases the diverse beauty of Sikkim.
Gangtok, with its bustling streets and vibrant markets, is a delightful city to explore. I spent my days wandering through the colorful streets, visiting the famous Rumtek Monastery, and indulging in local delicacies.
One of the highlights of my time in Gangtok was visiting the Enchey Monastery. This serene place of worship offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The peaceful ambiance here made it the perfect spot for some self-reflection and meditation.
A trip to Gangtok is incomplete without experiencing the beauty of Tsomgo Lake. Situated at an altitude of 12,400 feet, this glacial lake is a sight to behold. The crystal clear blue waters surrounded by snow-capped mountains create a truly enchanting atmosphere.
Pelling, a small town in West Sikkim, is known for its panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga peak, the third highest peak in the world. Trekking enthusiasts can embark on a thrilling journey to explore the trails around Pelling.
During my time in Pelling, I visited the Pemayangtse Monastery, which is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. The intricate artwork and the tranquil surroundings made this visit a truly memorable experience.
The highlight of my stay in Pelling was witnessing the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range from the famous viewpoint of Tiger Hill. The sight of the first rays of the sun illuminating the snow-covered mountains was absolutely awe-inspiring.
Lachung, a picturesque village in North Sikkim, was the final leg of my solo adventure. Situated at an altitude of 9,600 feet, this quaint village is known for its apple orchards and pristine beauty.
The journey to Lachung was an adventure in itself. The winding mountain roads surrounded by dense forests offered breathtaking views at every turn. I also had the opportunity to witness the majestic Yumthang Valley, also known as the Valley of Flowers, which is a must-visit in Lachung.
Another highlight of my time in Lachung was visiting the Lachung Monastery, where I had the chance to witness the monks chanting prayers. The spiritual atmosphere and the stunning views of the mountains made it a truly memorable experience.
My solo travel experience in Sikkim was truly liberating and empowering. Despite being a woman traveling alone, I felt safe and welcomed by the warm-hearted locals at every step of my journey. Sikkim, with its natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality, is a destination that should be on every traveler's bucket list.
So, if you're a solo female traveler looking for an adventure that challenges and inspires you, I highly recommend heading to Sikkim. Whether you're wandering through the streets of Gangtok, marveling at the majestic Kanchenjunga in Pelling, or exploring the pristine beauty of Lachung, Sikkim will leave you spellbound and craving for more.
