Adalaj Stepwell, also known as Adalaj ni Vav, is a unique Hindu water building located in the village of Adalaj, close to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India. Constructed by Queen Rudabai in 1498, it is intricately carved and serves as an excellent example of Indian architecture and engineering. The stepwell was built to provide water and a cool resting place for travelers and pilgrims. Adalaj Stepwell is a five-story deep well with a large number of platforms and galleries that are supported by ornate pillars. The walls are adorned with carvings of flowers, birds, fishes, and geometrical patterns. At the bottom, there is a small pool of water, which is accessible through a series of staircases that descend down harmoniously towards it. This stepwell is not only a cultural and historical edifice but also a spiritual retreat with its calming ambiance. The temperature inside the well is said to be about six degrees cooler than the outside. Adalaj Stepwell is a fine example of the Indo-Islamic fusion of architecture since it features Islamic floral patterns accommodating Hindu and Jain gods amidst its niches
