Chain Tree in Wayanad is a large Ficus tree, bound by a chain, and is situated beside the National Highway 766, near Lakkidi in Kerala, India. It has a unique legend associated with it, linked to the British colonial era. It is said that a tribal guide named Karinthandan helped a British engineer find paths through the difficult terrain of Wayanad during the colonial exploitation of the region. To take the credit for finding the route, the engineer is said to have killed the guide, whose spirit reportedly haunted the travelers thereafter. A priest later bound the troublesome ghost to this tree using a chain, and thus, the name 'Chain Tree' was coined. The site is not just a tourist spot but also a remembrance of cultural folklore. It is surrounded by lush greenery, providing visitors a serene atmosphere and a touch of the mystical past of Wayanad. The tree stands as a testament to the price of knowledge and betrayal.
