Edakkal Caves, nestled in the Ambukuthi Hills in Wayanad district of Kerala, India, are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km from Kalpetta. Stretching back to the Neolithic era, these relics are known for their Stone Age carvings and petroglyphs, which date back to 6000 BCE. Archaeologically significant, Edakkal Caves are identified as a potential area with indications of a prehistoric civilization or settlement in this region. Accessible only by a kilometer-long trek that involves climbing hundreds of stairs, the journey to the caves is as invigorating as it is scenic, surrounded by lush coffee plantations and spice gardens. Upon reaching, one can witness the spectacular nature of these formations and the ancient pictorial writings on the cave walls, which are open to interpretation and provide a glimpse into a long-gone era. These inscriptions are considered amongst the oldest human settlements ever discovered.

Don't give up
A bit of preparation is required for making this visit memorable. Remember it's a steep climb. Wear footwear accordingly. There are places to rest. So don't just give up. Take a break and continue.
