Ahar Cenotaphs is a historic site located in the Ahar area of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. This archaeological complex serves as the royal cremation ground for the Maharajas of Mewar. There are more than 250 cenotaphs of the maharanas and queens of Mewar built over approximately 350 years. These royal cenotaphs are known as 'Chhatris' and are an important monument that reflects the rich architectural heritage of Rajasthan. The Chhatris have intricately carved columns and are finely crafted with the use of marble and other stones. Each cenotaph is built at the exact spot where the ruler was cremated and carries historical engravings that include inscriptions of the respective maharana. The most striking of all is the cenotaph of Maharana Amar Singh. The architecture is a blend of Hindu temple architecture with dome-shaped tops typical of the cenotaphs found in Rajasthan. Ahar also contains a small museum nearby that exhibits various archaeological finds from the region, making it a place not only of historical significance but also of cultural and academic interest.
