Gadisar Lake Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Site/Nature Spot
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Gadisar Lake, also known as Gadsisar Lake, is an artificial water reservoir situated in the heart of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India. This historic lake was commissioned by the then Maharawal of Jaisalmer, Maharawal Gadsi Singh, in the year 1367 AD as a water conservation tank to solve the water scarcity problem of the arid region. Surrounded by exquisite temples, shrines, and ghats, it presents a mesmerizing blend of architecture and cultural heritage. The lake is bordered by the beautiful Tilon-ki-Pol, a gateway archway that was constructed by a royal courtesan named Tilon. Its serene water attracts numerous migratory birds during the winter months, making it a popular spot for bird watching. The banks are dotted with artistically carved Chhatris (cenotaphs), temples, and ghats where locals and tourists come to enjoy the tranquil ambiance, especially during sunrise and sunset. Boat rides on the lake offer stunning views of the Jaisalmer Fort and the reflection of the golden sandstone structures in the water, creating a picturesque setting.

Decaying Glory of the Yester years!
Whatever the historical importance may be of this man made lake, the present day scene is that of total neglect and decay. The water is murky and at some points it stinks.
