Best Time To Visit Edakkal Caves (Wayanad) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Edakkal Caves, Wayanad

The ideal time to visit Edakkal Caves in Wayanad is during the post-monsoon season, which spans from late September to March. This period is characterized by cool and pleasant weather, making it perfect for exploring the caves and soaking up the historic atmosphere. Since the caves are on a hillside, the drier months provide safer and more comfortable trekking conditions. Additionally, the lush greenery of Wayanad rejuvenated by the monsoon rains enhances the beauty of the surroundings. It is advisable to avoid the monsoon season, from June to August, as the heavy rains can lead to slippery paths and may cause the closure of the caves for safety reasons.

Moreover, during the winter months, particularly between December and February, the temperature drops significantly, allowing for a very enjoyable trek up to the caves without the heat and humidity that is present during the summer months. Mornings are the best time of day to plan your hike to the Edakkal Caves, as the weather is cooler and the chance of encountering a smaller crowd is higher. Additionally, the morning sunlight provides a clearer view of the ancient petroglyphs inside the caves, which date back to the Neolithic era, making it an ideal time for photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
