Traveling to Kathmandu, Nepal

Methods to Reach Kathmandu

By Air

The primary mode of international arrival is through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), located approximately 6 km from the center of Kathhmandu. It is the only international airport in Nepal and is well-connected with major cities around the world. Major airlines operating flights to Kathmandu include Nepal Airlines, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, and Air India. Upon arrival, you can take a pre-paid taxi or arrange for a hotel pickup to reach your accommodation in the city.

By Road

Visitors can enter Kathmandu by road from India. Border crossings at Sunauli-Bhairawa, Raxaul-Birganj, Kakarbhitta, and Mahendranagar are common entry points. From these borders, travelers can take local buses or hire cars to reach Kathmandu. This journey can take several hours and is recommended for more adventurous travelers.

Important Travel Tips

  • Make sure to check visa requirements before traveling; many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, but some must arrange it beforehand.
  • Currency exchange is available at the airport and various locations in the city; however, be mindful of exchange rates.
  • It's advisable to arrange airport transfers in advance, particularly if arriving late at night.
