Western Group of Temples Khajuraho Tourism

The Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Renowned for their architectural grandeur and intricate carvings, these temples represent a remarkable fusion of architecture and sculpture artistry in medieval India. Built between 950 to 1050 AD by the Chandela dynasty, these temples are fashioned out of sandstone and are famous for their Nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Although the temples are known for their Kamasutra art, this is but a small part of the overall temple art. Most of the sculptures depict various aspects of everyday life, gods, goddesses, warriors, musicians, and animals. Out of the original 85 temples, only 20 have survived the ravages of time, with the Kandariya Mahadeva temple being the most magnificent and largest, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temples exhibit exceptional creativity and craftsmanship of the period and offer an unparalleled glimpse into India's rich past.
