Type of destination: Natural Attraction
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Naini Lake, nestled amidst the Kumaon Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India, is the charming and iconic centerpiece of Nainital town, often referred to as the 'Lake District' of India. This natural freshwater body, tectonic in origin, is kidney-shaped or crescent-shaped and has an outfall at the southeastern end. The lake is bordered by the hill town of Nainital, which is named after the lake itself. Legends say that the lake is one of the 64 Shakti Peeths, where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell on earth while Lord Shiva was carrying her. It's surrounded by panoramic seven hills, lush greenery, and cottages and villas reflecting the colonial architecture. The lake is a popular spot for boating, with options ranging from paddle boats to rowing boats, allowing visitors to enjoy the serene beauty of the area. Naini Lake also hosts vibrant cultural events, particularly during the Nainital Winter Carnival. The breathtaking beauty of the lake at sunrise and sunset is a favorite among photographers and nature lovers.
