Early Days of Kankaria Lake

The history of tourism in Kankaria Lake can be traced back to the time of its creation in 1451 under the rule of Sultan Qutbuddin Ahmad Shah II. It quickly became a popular leisure spot among the royals and the aristocracy. The lake is historically known as "Hauz-e-Qutb" and was often visited for its serene ambiance and the garden called Nagina Wadi situated at the center of the lake.

British Era and Post-Independence Growth

During the British era, the lake continued to attract visitors and British officers for its tranquil environment. Following India's independence, the place maintained its status as a recreational site for the local citizens. However, the tourism potential of Kankaria Lake was not fully tapped until the early 21st century.

Revitalization and Rise in Tourism

In 2007-2008, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation undertook a major project to revitalize the Kankaria Lakefront. The initiative led to the redevelopment of the surrounding area, installing various attractions such as a toy train, a balloon ride, a kids' city, and an amusement park. The beautification of the area and the addition of food stalls and evening light shows turned it into a prominent spot for both domestic and international tourists.

Increase in Recreational and Cultural Activities

The introduction of the week-long Kankaria Carnival in December 2008 was a turning point for tourism at Kankaria Lake. The carnival welcomes thousands of visitors each year and offers a plethora of cultural performances, magic shows, and arts and crafts activities.

Latest Tourism Trends at Kankaria Lake

In the recent times, Kankaria Lake has seen a growing trend in experience-based tourism. Tourists are seeking more interactive and engaging activities, and the lakefront's attractions cater to this demand. The public-private partnership in developing attractions around Kankaria Lake has also set a model for sustainable tourism in urban spaces.

Impact and Recognition

Due to these efforts, Kankaria Lake has garnered various awards and accolades, solidifying its place as an essential destination within Ahmedabad's tourism landscape. Notably, it received the Best Public Space Award by HUDCO in 2016.

Today, Kankaria Lake stands not only as a testament to Ahmedabad's rich history but also as an example of modern urban tourism development in India.
