Hemkund Lake Tourism History

Hemkund Lake and Hemkunt Sahib, Uttarakhand, India: A Tourism Overview

Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Hemkund Sahib is a prominent Sikh pilgrimage site beside the glacial Hemkund Lake. At an impressive altitude of 4632 meters (15,197 feet) above sea level, it is the highest Gurudwara in the world. The area is steeped in religious significance and is also cherished for its stunning natural beauty, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.

The History of Tourism at Hemkund Sahib

The history of tourism at Hemkund Sahib is closely connected to its significance in Sikh religion. According to the holy scripture of Sikhs, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, meditated by the banks of a pristine lake surrounded by seven snow-capped peaks, which is identified as Hemkund. It wasn't until the 20th century that the exact location of Hemkund Lake was established and an initiative to build a Sikh Gurudwara commenced.

In 1930, after a thorough search, veteran Sikh soldier Havildar Sohan Singh discovered the site, and with grace and efforts of Bhai Vir Singh, a prominent Sikh scholar, the construction of the Gurudwara began. The Gurudwara was finally established in the 1960s, and since then, it has become a revered destination for Sikh pilgrims, known as Hemkunt Sahib.

Access and the Trek to Hemkund Sahib

Access to Hemkund Sahib is via a challenging trek that starts from Govindghat and passes through Ghangaria, which is also the base camp for another popular trek to the Valley of Flowers. The trek to Hemkund Sahib covers a distance of approximately 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) embarking on a steep trail. Due to its high altitude, the Gurudwara and the lake are accessible only for a brief period each year between May or June and October, after which the area is covered in snow.

Current Tourism Trends

Eco-Friendly Initiatives: With the increase in visitors, there have been significant efforts to maintain the ecological balance of the region. Initiatives such as banning the use of plastic along the trek and the implementation of waste management systems have been undertaken to preserve the purity and sanctity of Hemkund Sahib.

Adventure Tourism: Apart from being a religious site, Hemkund Sahib has garnered attention from trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. Its picturesque locale and the challenging terrain provide an ideal mix for those seeking spiritual solace in the lap of the Himalayas while engaging in an adventure activity.

Helicopter Services: For those unable to undertake the arduous trek, helicopter services to Ghangaria are available from Govindghat. This has made the sacred site more accessible, allowing a broader demographic of pilgrims and tourists to visit Hemkund Sahib.

Things to Remember When Visiting Hemkund Sahib
