Lokpal Lake, also known as Hemkund (literal meaning 'Lake of Snow') is a high altitude lake (4329 meters) located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It is famously associated with the Sikh place of worship, Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib, which is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. The lake is surrounded by seven majestic peaks, each adorned by a Nishan Sahib on its cliff. It is a place of significant spiritual importance not only to Sikhs but also to Hindus as it is mentioned in the Ramayana and associated with Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama. The trek to Hemkund Sahib is about 19 kilometers from Govindghat, which is the starting point of the journey. This pristine blue water lake remains covered with snow for most of the year and has crystal clear water, which reflects the sky and the surrounding peaks.
