Banni Grasslands Reserve, situated near the Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India, is one of the largest grasslands in Asia, spreading across an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometers. This arid grassland ecosystem sits on the outer southern edge of the marshy salt flats of Rann of Kutch and is a unique ecological phenomenon. Banni is derived from the Hindi word 'banai', meaning made, indicating the creation of the grasslands by the Indus River bringing silt over the millennia and forming a rich layer of soil. Known for its rich biodiversity, Banni grasslands are home to numerous species of flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot various species, including the endangered Indian wolf, the chinkara (Indian gazelle), and the endemic Banni buffalo. The region also hosts one of the largest congregations of migratory birds. The grasslands are also culturally significant with the indigenous Maldhari tribes living here, who have unique customs and traditions.
