Dholavira, located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India, is one of the most prominent archaeological sites of the Indus Valley Civilization. It is situated on the Khadir bet island in the Rann of Kutch and was discovered in 1967 by J. P. Joshi. Extending over an area of 120 acres, Dholavira is famed for its remarkable town planning, water conservation systems, and architecture. The site is divided into three parts: the citadel, the middle town, and the lower town. Each of these parts is surrounded by massive fortifications constructed using sun-dried mud bricks and stone. Among the unique features of Dholavira are its ten large inscriptions, made up of giant letters carved out of white stone. These are among the earliest examples of written script from the Harappan era. Artefacts like seals, beads, animal bones, gold, silver, terracotta ornaments, vessels, and tools have been excavated here, shedding light on the civilization that thrived around 4500 years ago.
