The ideal time to visit Hemkund Sahib is during the summer and early autumn months, specifically from June to October. This pilgrimage site, nestled in the Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 4,329 meters above sea level, is accessible only for a brief period when the snow melts and the path becomes clear. Starting from June, the Sikh shrine is open for pilgrims after the ceremonial opening dates, which often depend on the weather and the snow conditions. The weather during these months is pleasant with moderate temperatures, making the trek to Hemkund Sahib a memorable experience.
However, by late September to early October, the climate begins to transition towards winter, and you might experience the early signs of cold weather setting in, making it crucial for trekkers to be prepared with warm clothing. The monsoon season, which usually runs from July to August, can be challenging due to heavy rains causing landslides and making the trek routes slippery. Thus, it is recommended to plan your visit before or after the monsoons for a more comfortable journey. Keep in mind that post-October, Hemkund Sahib and the trekking routes are closed for the winter due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions, and they reopen only around the next June.
