Jantar Mantar in Delhi is a historical astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in 1724. It is located in the heart of the capital city of India, New Delhi. The observatory consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments designed to predict the movements of the sun, moon, and planets as well as to compile astronomical tables. Among these, the Samrat Yantra, a giant sundial, is the most prominent. This architectural wonder was used to measure the time of the day accurately to a fraction of a second. It exemplifies the scientific prowess of ancient Indian astronomers. Jantar Mantar serves not only as a fascinating reminder of India's rich astronomical heritage but has also become a popular tourist attraction. The instruments are made out of stone and marble and have inscriptions in Arabic and Sanskrit. In 2010, Jantar Mantar was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite being surrounded by modern buildings, this historic observatory provides a unique juxtaposition against the bustling backdrop of the city, making it a symbol of India's scientific heritage juxtaposed with its modern-day hustle.
