Type of destination: Historic Site
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Purana Qila, which translates to 'Old Fort', is one of the oldest forts in Delhi, India. Its current form was built in the 16th century by Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Sur Empire, on the ancient site of the legendary city of Indraprastha. The fort boasts massive walls and three grand gateways: the Bada Darwaza, Humayun Gate, and Talaqi Gate. Inside its walls, there are several historical structures, such as the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and the Sher Mandal, an octagonal tower. Purana Qila is a perfect blend of history, architecture, and archaeology. Excavations here have unearthed evidence of various cultural phases, ranging from the Mauryan to Early Mughal Empire. Historians and tourists alike are drawn to its vast lawns and the encompassing sense of history. Additionally, the adjacent lake offers boating opportunities, and the sound-and-light show held in the evenings narrates the fort's history dramatically. Purana Qila stands as a testimony to Delhi's rich past and remains a popular destination for both heritage enthusiasts and general visitors.
