One of the largest crafts museum in India
Had visited this crafts museum in New Delhi a long back ago. This museum is a popular tourist attraction and is visited by tourists. This museum located at the corner of Pragati Maidan. It is commonly known as National Crafts Museum. This museum houses a village showcasing wooden artifacts, embroidery, artificial jewelry, handicrafts etc. It also has an auditorium, a laboratory, research and documentation facilities etc. This museum is run by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. There are various galleries within the museum. It is open from 9.30 am to 5 pm. This museum is closed on Mondays. It is accessible from Pragati Maidan metro railway station. Had admired the different types of handicrafts and observed the Craftsmen creating the beautiful handicrafts as a school going child. This museum is an ideal place for families as well as school children. It is a must visit place and should not be missed when in New Delhi.

Beautiful place which has a collection of beautiful and colorful handicrafts from various parts of india. Also you can checkout the models of types of houses found in different parts of India.

Insulting and depressing disaster
It is depressing that this museum, that should showcase with vitality a key aspect of India’s immense cultural heritage, is in such bad conditions. The museum show some interesting pieces, but few of them are outstanding. I’d say it’s a relatively minor collection. The pieces are badly arranged, as if the cleaning person never put them back properly. There is no information on each pieces, unless one requests it from an unwilling guard. Some rooms where just unbearable to see. The textiles are full of dust, pilled up as if it was the storage room of a cheap textiles shop, and the lights couldn’t be more crude. Some vitrines where almost empty and totally dirty, and there were even things left on the floor from construction processes. Hard to describe how bad it was, they should just close those rooms at least, if they cannot do at least a decent display. There were artisans languishing on the patio, trying to sell their goods to the passer by, but the museum provides no information or signage that would help them. Instead, there is a store before the patio selling similar products. More than half of the rooms where under construction, nevertheless we were charged the complete fee. Ridiculous. The premises are beautiful but we left sad and angry, thinking of all the wasted potential.

A lovely, outdoor museum displaying handicrafts from all over India
A must-see for visitors to India, if you have a few hours to spare in Delhi. A nice way to spend the time while admiring beautiful and intricate handicrafts displayed in a beautiful, airy, outdoor setting with banyan trees. Also includes traditional housing from the different states of India. The variety of handicrafts, the beauty of the artwork, and the talent of the artists, is breathtaking. We saw many of the artists working on their creations, both large scale and miniature. You can even purchase some of the art, either directly from the artist or in the museum store. There is also an excellent cafe in the grounds, but it needs reservations.
